El mercado de Chichi – To the market in Chichi

Al mercado en Chichi – To the market in Chichi
10 de Julio, 2011
Antigua a Chichi 2 h 40′

The Chichi market

The thursday and sundays markets in Chichicastenango (Chichi) are supposed to be the largest in Guatemala so we left Antigua after one day (sunday) planning to return after visiting Chichi and Lake Atitlán. As all markets we’ve been to Chichi was chaotic and had hundreds of vendors selling mostly the same: ones selling handbags, others clothes, others pottery, fruits and vegetables, etc. The market sprawls across about 16 blocks (four by four blocks) and unlike other markets it does not feel claustrophobic. We ended up buying only two small cloth animals and some fruit. What we have found from going to big markets like Chichi and Otavalo in Ecuador is that you can get the same things in smaller markets in towns you would visit anyway, so visiting the markets is purely for the experience.
